Boox Palma Review

Boox Palma Review

Recently, I switched my reading device from a Kindle (10th generation) to a Boox Palma.

The reason is that the Kindle felt too slow, and I noticed my reading speed dropping.

If you’re reading novels or other texts you want to savor, that’s not a big issue.

But when it comes to non-fiction, I often scan through to find the information I need.

In other words, the device’s processing speed becomes very important.

After switching, I feel this purchase was a success.

In this article, I’d like to share why I think so.

What is Boox Palma?

Boox Palma

Simply put, it’s an e-paper Android device.

The advantage of this unusual combination is its speed.

Typically, e-paper devices are slow.

This is because they run on proprietary operating systems.

Turning pages takes time, and scrolling through your library can also feel sluggish as each page loads.

Boox Palma solves this problem by running Android.

Additionally, like other Android devices, you can use a web browser and download apps.

For those curious about the specs, here’s a summary:

What Happened After Switching from Kindle to Boox Palma?

In short, my reading volume increased.

Before switching to Boox Palma, I was averaging about three books per month.

After the switch, I’m able to read around five books per month.

Why My Reading Increased

The main reason is that reading has become dramatically more comfortable.

I think there are three key factors.

Speed (page turns and highlighting)

As mentioned earlier, the device is incredibly fast.

Turning pages is smooth, and highlighting text is quick as well.

I didn’t realize how much faster operation could make reading more enjoyable.

I realized that the small stress caused by slow performance on my Kindle had been quietly reducing my motivation to read.

Comfortable to hold with one hand

Its compact size makes it easy to hold with one hand, even for long reading sessions.

This is especially convenient for reading in bed.

Since I use Boox for bedtime reading, this is a huge advantage.

By the way, it weighs only 170g, making it very easy to handle.

Easy to take anywhere

Its phone-like size allows it to fit into a small pocket in my bag.

This makes it easy to grab and read anytime, anywhere.

I especially love how easy it is to pull out on crowded morning trains.

Thanks to this, I can now focus on reading wherever I am.

Downsides of Boox Palma

For its performance, this device is quite expensive.

The brand-new price is USD 199.99.

I managed to buy a used one in good condition at a lower price, but spending this much on a device with such a limited purpose requires courage.

If you mainly want a fast e-reader, many people might be happier buying an iPad instead.

However, I use Boox Palma as my “nighttime smartphone,” and I’m very satisfied.

Boox Palma can be a nighttime smartphone

It reduces blue light, lets me quickly look things up, and even functions as an alarm.

This makes it perfect to keep by my bedside as a small, multifunctional device.
