UNIQLO AIRism Cotton Oversized T-Shirt Review: Honest Thoughts from a Former Employee

UNIQLO AIRism Cotton Oversized T-Shirt : Honest Thoughts from a Former Employee

In this article, I’ll share my thoughts on the UNIQLO AIRism Cotton Oversized T-Shirt.

I’ll go through both the good points and the areas for improvement as honestly and objectively as possible.

To be clear from the start, this is a very well-made T-shirt for the price.
But at the same time, it may not be the best option if you’re looking for something to use for a long time.

Also, there are no photos in this article.
I used to wear this T-shirt almost every day and owned more than ten of them, but I’ve since gotten rid of all of them.

Still, I decided to write this review because I understand both its strengths and weaknesses from experience.

Background

A bit of context before the review.

I worked at UNIQLO for about three and a half years.
During that time, I saw a wide range of products, and this T-shirt was clearly one of the main items.

In stores, staff check daily sales rankings every morning.
This T-shirt was almost always ranked number one—not just seasonally, but throughout the entire year.

It was one of those rare items that kept selling consistently.

About AIRism Cotton Oversized T-Shirt

This item was first released in Spring/Summer 2020.

It features a two-layer structure: cotton on the outside and AIRism fabric on the inside.
The silhouette is oversized with drop shoulders and slightly longer sleeves.

It combines functionality—such as moisture-wicking, quick-drying, and breathability—with a clean, cotton-like appearance.

Because of this balance, it works well for both casual and more polished outfits.

What is AIRism?
AIRism is UNIQLO’s functional fabric line designed to feel “as light as air,” almost like you’re not wearing anything.
It uses ultra-fine fibers that quickly absorb and release moisture, helping the fabric dry fast.
It also provides a cooling touch, breathability, and odor control, making it comfortable in hot and humid conditions.
Although it’s often associated with summer, it’s designed to be worn year-round.

Why This T-Shirt Is Good

Well-balanced silhouette

The boxy shape with dropped shoulders gives it a modern oversized look.

The width is relaxed, but the length is not too long, which makes it easy to style.
The neckline is also well-balanced—not too tight, not too loose.

It pairs easily with both wide pants and slim pants, making it very versatile.

Comfortable in hot weather

Thanks to the AIRism fabric on the inside, it stays relatively dry even when you sweat.

It has good breathability and moisture control, which makes it suitable for humid summer conditions.
You get the look of cotton with the comfort of functional innerwear.

Clean and slightly premium fabric feel

The surface has a subtle sheen, so it doesn’t look cheap.

When the fabric moves, it creates a natural drape and a clean impression.
For a T-shirt in this price range, this is a strong point.

What Could Be Improved

Not very durable

This is probably the biggest downside.

The neckline tends to lose its shape after just a few washes.
After one season, it can start to look slightly worn out.

If you’re okay with replacing it every season, it’s fine.
But if you prefer long-lasting items, the cost performance may not feel great.

Stains are hard to remove

Especially oil stains.

In daily life, it’s easy to get small stains while eating or cooking, and they don’t always come out easily.
This might be due to the fabric, but the exact reason is unclear.

The gray color (07 GRAY) was particularly difficult, as stains were more noticeable and harder to deal with.

Conclusion

Overall, this is a very well-designed T-shirt for the price.

However, it’s not necessarily an item built for long-term use.
It makes more sense as something you wear heavily for a season and then replace.

Because of that, your evaluation of this piece will likely depend on what you expect from a T-shirt.

Personally, I tend to avoid clothing that isn’t built to last.
From an environmental perspective, it doesn’t sit right with me.

That said, I also don’t think it’s realistic to stop buying clothes altogether.
When I was working in retail, I realized that the desire to dress well doesn’t really have an end—people always want something new.

So rather than avoiding consumption entirely,
I think a more practical approach is to choose items that can be worn for a long time and take care of them.

In that sense, UNIQLO as a brand does a very good job.
Their idea of “LifeWear” is reflected in many of their products—simple designs and solid quality that work over time.

However, this T-shirt feels slightly different to me.

For that reason, I personally wouldn’t buy it again, and I no longer wear it.
