In this series, I introduce places and restaurants that Japanese people actually go to.
These aren’t tourist spots that have gone viral on social media or places designed to look stylish.
Restaurants people stop by after work.
Places they often visit on their days off.
This series is about taking a small glimpse into everyday life in Japan.
This time, I’m introducing Okinawa Sakaba Goppachi in Koenji, Tokyo.
I used to live in Koenji.
Back then, I often came here for lunch.
Sometimes I came alone, and sometimes with my wife.
Goppachi is actually an izakaya where you can enjoy Okinawan food and drinks.
But I’ve never been here for drinks at night.
I always come for lunch.
Why?
Because the Okinawa soba here is really good.
And what I always order is the Yaeyama Soba Set.
What Is Okinawa Sakaba Goppachi?

Okinawa Sakaba Goppachi is an Okinawan restaurant located just a short walk from the North Exit of Koenji Station.
It opened in 2005 and has been serving the Koenji community for more than 20 years.
Along with Okinawan food, you can also enjoy Orion Beer, awamori, and other Okinawan drinks.
It is part of the Dakid瓶 Group, which has long shared Okinawan food and culture in Koenji, and Goppachi is also open for lunch.
Around lunchtime, locals come here to eat.
When I lived in Koenji, I was one of them.
Why I Kept Coming Back
The reason is very simple.
There are days when cooking just feels like a bit too much effort.
On those days, I want to go out and eat something.
But I don’t necessarily want something rich and heavy like ramen.
I want something a little lighter.
But I still want something with a bit of a punch.
That’s when Goppachi’s Okinawa soba was perfect.
It’s light, but it doesn’t feel like something is missing.
So before I knew it, I kept coming back.
What Is Okinawa Soba?

When you hear the word soba, you might imagine the buckwheat noodles commonly eaten in Japan.
But Okinawa soba is quite different from regular Japanese soba.
Instead of buckwheat flour, Okinawa soba noodles are generally made from wheat flour.
Because of this, their appearance and texture are different from soba on mainland Japan and are actually closer to Chinese-style noodles.
Okinawa soba is an extremely popular dish in Okinawa, typically served with toppings such as pork in a flavorful broth.
The broth is another important part of Okinawa soba.
In general, the broth can be made using ingredients such as pork, chicken, and bonito flakes, with the ingredients and combinations varying depending on the restaurant and region.
It has plenty of umami, but it isn’t as heavy as ramen.
That’s one of the reasons I like Okinawa soba.
What I Always Order: The Yaeyama Soba Set

Whenever I come to Goppachi, I always order the Yaeyama Soba Set.
Yaeyama soba is a type of Okinawa soba traditionally eaten in the Yaeyama Islands of Okinawa Prefecture.
Noodles and a flavorful broth, just as you would expect from Okinawa soba.
It has plenty of flavor, but doesn’t leave you feeling too heavy afterward.
Sometimes I don’t want something as rich as ramen.
But something too light can feel a little unsatisfying.
On days like that, this bowl is just right.
This is also why, even though Goppachi is an izakaya, I always came here for lunch.
Simply because the soba is so good.
And there’s another reason I always order this set.
Daito sushi.
Daito Sushi

Daito sushi is a local specialty from Minami Daito Island in Okinawa Prefecture.
Fish such as tuna or Spanish mackerel is marinated in a soy sauce-based sauce and placed on sweet vinegared rice.
Unlike typical nigiri sushi, the fish itself has a rich, seasoned flavor.
The Yaeyama Soba Set at Goppachi comes with Daito sushi.
And it’s delicious.
You take a few bites of warm Okinawa soba with its flavorful broth, then have a piece of Daito sushi soaked with flavor.
Then you go back to the soba.
The combination works so well.
The Yaeyama soba is already delicious on its own, but the Daito sushi makes this lunch feel a little more special.
A Restaurant Loved by Koenji Locals
Goppachi isn’t located in one of Tokyo’s famous tourist areas.
It’s in Koenji.
Just a short train ride from Shinjuku, Koenji is a neighborhood filled with vintage clothing stores, small restaurants, live music venues, and more.
And Goppachi has been part of this neighborhood for more than 20 years.
When I lived there, locals would casually come in for lunch.
People eating lunch alone.
People coming with friends or family.
Sometimes I came alone, and sometimes I came with my wife.
It isn’t a restaurant you save for a special occasion.
I don’t feel like cooking today.
I don’t want anything as heavy as ramen.
But I still want something properly delicious.
On days like that, I naturally found myself heading to Goppachi.
That’s what this place was for me.
I think it’s one small part of everyday life in Japan that you don’t necessarily see by visiting tourist attractions.
Final Thoughts
There are plenty of places to eat Okinawan food in Tokyo.
But if you ever find yourself in Koenji, try having lunch at Okinawa Sakaba Goppachi.
My recommendation is the Yaeyama Soba Set.
Okinawa soba and Daito sushi.
Not as heavy as ramen.
But still satisfying.
It’s a lunch I came back for again and again when I lived in Koenji.
Eat alongside the locals, and you might get a small taste of everyday life in Tokyo.
