Trying On the New Balance 2010: My Quick Impressions

Trying On the New Balance 2010: My Quick Impressions

I recently tried on the New Balance 2010.

This isn’t a full long-term review, but I wanted to jot down some quick impressions as a personal note.

New Balance 2010

What I prioritize when buying shoes

First, a bit of context on what matters to me when I buy shoes: can I walk 20,000 steps without my feet hurting?

At work, I walk about 20,000 steps a day.

For reference, the average adult male walks around 5,000 steps, so I walk roughly four times as much.

I’m quite particular when it comes to shoes.

When I shop for shoes, I mainly look at:

  1. Cushioning – Essential for reducing strain on your feet and knees.
  2. Responsiveness – Helps convert each step into forward motion. A good bounce can make a big difference during long walks.
  3. Stability – A secure fit, especially around the heel, prevents wasted energy and keeps your gait efficient. Loose or unstable shoes tire you out faster.

Here’s what I felt after comparing them with the following New Balance models

Here are the models I’ve used previously.

• CM996

•  M2040 V1

• M998

•  WR993

•  MR993

•  M990 V5

•  2002R

•  2002R GORETEX

•  M990V3

 •  991v2

 •  990v6

Cushioning

New Balance 2010’s Cushioning

The heel cushioning is excellent.

The Abzorb SBS absorbs impact really well.

It feels like the cushioning compresses nicely under your foot, and the soft, bouncy material is satisfying to walk on.

Stability

The upper fits well.

No slipping at the heel.

However, the heel cushioning is a bit too soft, which made it feel slightly wobbly at times.

Responsiveness

Almost none.

The forefoot lacks rebound, so I imagine walking long distances would be tiring.

This lack of responsiveness is the main reason I didn’t buy them.

Overall impression

Overall, I’d say these are more “standing” shoes.

The heel cushioning is great, so standing for long periods wouldn’t be tiring.

But for walking, the lack of rebound would likely make them tiring.

So these shoes feel better suited for people who stand a lot rather than those who walk long distances.

Looking closely, the soft, squishy cushioning combined with the arch support follows a design similar to the 2002R’s Stability Web.

In fact, they feel quite similar on foot, and I’d describe the 2010 as basically an upgraded 2002R with improved heel cushioning.
