This article is the NEW BALANCE 993 review .
I’ve been wearing these shoes for a three years, so I’ll share my honest thoughts based on my long-term experience with them.
By the way, the New Balance 993 that I own has aged like this over the course of a three year.

Easy to Match with Any Outfit
The sharp shoe shape unique to the 993 (Bulky Yet Sharp)
The appeal of the New Balance 993 lies in its versatility. It pairs well with any fashion style.
I believe the reason for this is its unique shape.
While the sole has a substantial volume, the overall form remains sharp.
Thanks to this design, it works seamlessly with both slim-fitting outfits and bulkier clothing.

A Design That Embodies Functional Beauty
There are more comfortable shoes out there, but I still keep this pair.
One of its key attractions is its functional and aesthetic design.
The rugged sole gives it a highly functional appearance.
And it’s not just for show—every aspect of the design enhances its performance.
In a way, it’s similar to the first-generation G-Shock, which perfectly balanced function and aesthetics.
I have a rule of owning only six pairs of sneakers.
I don’t want to keep shoes that don’t fit in my shoe rack.
So, when I buy a new pair, I sell an old one.
Because of this, my sneaker lineup changes frequently, but the 993 is one pair I always want to keep. That’s how much I appreciate its design.
Honestly, It’s Not That Comfortable…
Limited Shock Absorption and Responsiveness
The downside of this shoe is that its comfort level is just average.
Of course, being a New Balance shoe, it’s far more comfortable than Nike or Adidas models.
However, compared to other New Balance shoes, I find it a bit tiring to wear for long periods.
Here are the New Balance models I’ve worn in the past:
• CM996
• M998
• M2040 V1
• WR993
• MR993
• M990 V5
• 2002R
• 2002R GORETEX
• M990V3
• 991v2
(Based on comparisons with these models, I’d rate the comfort of the 993 as average.)
I work in a clothing store and walk over 20,000 steps a day.
For short walks of around 5,000 steps, any shoe will do.
But once I pass 10,000 steps, the shoe’s performance significantly impacts my fatigue level.
Since the 993 was released in 2008, it was likely considered top-tier in comfort at the time.
However, when compared to the latest 990V6, its shock absorption and responsiveness fall short.

The 993 uses ABZORB cushioning, which specializes in shock absorption.
However, at 64kg, I find it slightly stiff.
For someone heavier, the cushioning might feel just right.
For people with a lighter body weight like me, shoes with FuelCell or REVlite cushioning would be more comfortable for walking.

conclusion
The 993 isn’t the most comfortable shoe, but it goes well with any outfit.
Since I often walk over 20,000 steps a day, I usually only keep comfortable shoes.
However, despite its average comfort, I can’t bring myself to part with the 993.
When I’m unsure which shoes to wear, the 993 always matches my outfit perfectly.
